If you need space and utility, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is hard to beat.
What type of vehicle is the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban? What is it compared to?
With three rows of seats, a powerful V-8 or turbodiesel engine and impressive towing capacity, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is an SUV that does it all. Buy it against the long versions of the Ford Expedition and Jeep Grand Wagoneer, as well as the Toyota Sequoia.
Is the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban a good SUV?
While its size and seat won't be for everyone, the Suburban is a full-size SUV that easily earns its TCC rating of 6.2 out of 10 thanks to its comfortable cabin, high-tech amenities, and wide range. (read more abouthow we rate cars.)
What's New in the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban?
Parent company General Motors' Super Cruise system is newly available and offers limited hands-free functionality on many highways.

The Suburban is a close relative of the shorter Tahoe, albeit with about 15 inches of extra space divided between the cargo and passenger compartments. The Burb comes standard with a 5.3-liter V-8, although the optional 6.2-liter V-8 provides stronger acceleration and a towing capacity of up to 8,200 pounds. The optional 3.0-liter turbodiesel is expensive, but it can make up for it with up to 28 mpg on the highway. All models ride relatively smoothly, thanks in part to all that weight. Too big for serious off-road use, the Suburban still comes in a beefy Z71 configuration with plenty of ground clearance and studded tires. Inside, the Suburban offers an impressive amount of space, although thanks to its sturdy frame, it doesn't fit as well as a minivan. Nine seats are standard, but most Suburbans have front and second row seats for a total of seven occupants. Behind the third row, over 42 cubic feet of cargo space await. A low four-star NHTSA crash test rating is offset by a wide range of standard crash avoidance technologies. How much does the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban cost? The 2023 Suburban starts at around $58,795 and can go as high as around $90,000 with options. An all-wheel drive Suburban LT starts at $67,295 and adds details like leather seats and Google built-in for the 10.2-inch touchscreen. Where will the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban be built? Not Arlington, Texas.

Chevrolet Suburban 2023
style
While far from sexy, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban has clean lines and a wide range of trim options.
Is the Chevrolet Suburban an attractive car?
For its size, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban boasts a clean, modern design. Its blocky profile is offset by sharp accents at the front with integrated LED lights and a tall, wide grille with headlights that seem almost hidden at first glance. It's a 6 out of 10 on the TCC scale.

Wheel sizes can go up to 22 inches. RST versions get black and red accents, while the Z71 gets a unique front bumper for higher ground clearance (and slightly worse fuel economy). Inside, all but the base model have a large, bright 10.2-inch touchscreen atop the dash and a digital readout framed by the steering wheel. However, the button on the left side of the screen isn't as responsive.

Chevrolet Suburban 2023
Performance
The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban can be very powerful.
Is the Chevrolet Suburban 4WD?
All-wheel drive is standard on the Z71 and optional elsewhere. The Suburban Z71 also includes a limited-slip rear differential and 2-speed transfer case, as well as skid plates and studded tires, which will do as long as you can find a road that's wide enough.

How fast is the Chevrolet Suburban? The fastest is the optional 6.2-liter V8, which comes standard on several higher trim levels. With 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, it's a huge improvement over the 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque in the entry-level 5.3-liter. The optional 3.0-liter turbodiesel, available on select trims, makes 277 hp and a strong 460 pound-feet of torque. The standard 10-speed automatic works well most of the time, though it can stutter when driving at low speeds. Towing is the Suburban's forte, at least among large SUVs. Models with the big V-8 and turbodiesel can tow over 8,000 pounds in the right settings. This adds a point to your score here. The Suburban's 7 out of 10 is reinforced by its smooth ride. The available adaptive air suspension rides better despite being paired with big wheels wrapped in short sidewall tires. No Suburban handles like a sports car, but it doesn't feel as powerful as it actually does when driving down a winding road.

Chevrolet Suburban 2023
comfort and quality
The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban is huge inside.
It might not be as well-proportioned as a minivan, but the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban offers plenty of interior space and space for up to nine passengers. Its 9 points out of 10 are attributed to its ability to comfortably carry all passengers and luggage.
The Suburban's front seats are most commonly found in a dual-tray configuration separated by a wide center console. Second-row drivers get 42 inches of legroom, and the third-row 36.7 inches is as good as any vehicle in its prime. The only downside is access to the third row, which requires a lot of contortion even with the second row seats slightly folded down.

Cargo space measures nearly 94 cubic feet behind the second row and an impressive 145 cubic feet with the second row below. The cargo bed is lower than previous Suburbans, but still higher than a minivan or large crossover SUV.

Security
The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban could do better in crash tests.
How safe is the Chevrolet Suburban?
A four-star NHTSA rating indicates a worrisome rollover rating, although the 2023 Suburban does offer a good range of features to avoid accidents.

It scores a 6 out of 10 on our scale. All models are equipped with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, active lane control, automatic high beams, rear seat reminder, rear parking sensors and LED lighting. Adaptive cruise control is optional (although it should be standard at these prices). New this year is Super Cruise, which offers limited hands-free driving on many highways. A rear view mirror and surround view camera system are optional and well worth it.

Chevrolet Suburban 2023
characteristics
The 2023 Chevrolet Suburban can be equipped as a luxury SUV, priced accordingly.
Offered in a variety of trim levels, the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban scores an 8 out of 10 thanks to good standard equipment, impressive infotainment and a wide range of options.
The lineup starts with the $58,795 LS model, which buys an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, power front seats, remote start, and plenty of USB ports.

All models are covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty that includes the first service unit. A 5-year/60,000-mile warranty covers the powertrain. Which Chevrolet Suburban Should I Buy? We'd stick with the Suburban LT for its larger, brighter 10.2-inch touchscreen, which also includes Google apps like Google Maps and Assistant. This trim starts at $64,295 and also includes leather interiors, heated front seats, power tailgate and Bose audio. How much does a fully loaded Chevrolet Suburban cost? Swipe through the RST, Premier, and Z71 models and you've got the High Country, which can go as high as $90,000 with a few options. At that price, it might be worth looking at a GMC Yukon XL Denali or even a Cadillac Escalade.

Chevrolet Suburban 2023
fuel consumption
The optional turbodiesel delivers impressive fuel efficiency.
Does the Chevrolet Suburban run well on gasoline?
Most of the time, no. The standard 5.3-liter V-8 is rated at just 15 mpg in the city, 20 on the highway, 17 combined, or 1 mpg less with four-wheel drive. Models with the Z71 equipment package are even more thirsty. We give it a 1 here based on EPA ratings.
The enlarged 6.2 liter V8 is similarly rated, although more powerful. Figure 16 mpg combined regardless of configuration. However, the turbodiesel can reach 28 mpg on the highway in certain configurations. That was a midsize economy sedan not too long ago.
