How to choose the best laptop backpack for you
How big should my laptop backpack be?
First you need to pick up a backpack of the right size. No, not for your body (although that's a consideration), but for your laptop. Whether your laptop is 13", 15" or 17", you need the laptop compartment for your laptop. Most laptop backpacks come in the dimensions listed so check before you buy. Note: Don't be tempted to buy a laptop that appears to be too big, as you don't want your laptop to have a lot of space to throw around in the compartment.
Also, consider (and this is common sense) how big your backpack should be. A backpack that is too big is uncomfortable and cumbersome to carry when you don't really need the extra space.
What kind of material is right for me?
This depends on where you will be using the backpack. If you're going to be outdoors a lot, you'll need something weather-resistant, possibly even with a rain cover (think leather, neoprene, and rubberized plastic). However, if you are only using it indoors, you may not need to be as specific in your choice of material.
But even if it doesn't stand up to the elements, you should choose a sturdy material because you don't want your laptop to get damaged, and that happens easily. If you or your bag gets bumped on the train, or if you have to pick it up and put it down, you want to know if you can handle it.
What should the laptop compartment look like?
Laptop compartments come in different forms. Some are slightly sectioned without additional protection. This isn't a problem if you have a laptop bag or bag that offers protection, but if your laptop is empty (or in an unprotected bag), you should get a compartment that offers protection through thick or rigid padding. . .
What else should I consider?
While most of the time you'll be carrying your pack on your back, you can also carry it by hand, so consider a pack with shoulder straps. Also, consider how many additional compartments you need (what else do you need to bring?) and whether they should be inside or outside the pack.
Laptop backpacks also come in different styles, so you need to buy a bag that suits the occasion you're using it for. Be smart for the office and tough for the outdoors.
